Art C-Labs

Art C-Labs

In these C-Labs led by the advisor, Karin Walen, I learned the basics of contour line drawing and water coloring.

Basics of Contour Line Drawing

1 week

What Is It?
  • A contour drawing is an outline of a shape without any shading, texture, or tone

  • Contour drawings usually have very little detail

  • Contour drawing is the most basic type of drawing

5 Styles
  • Pure: Simplest, consisting of only the most basic outlines.

  • Continuous: A drawing created from one line without picking up the pencil.

  • Modified: Line drawing that allows the image to periodically be looked at and the pencil to be moved.

  • Blind: Modified contour without looking at the page.

  • Cross: Uses lines to represent curves, shading, and depth.

Basics of Watercoloring

Basics of Watercoloring

3 week

What Is It?
  • Watercolor is a type of paint comprised of only color pigments

  • Watercolor is activated by water, whereas other paints such as acrylic paints can be used directly from the bottle

  • Liquid watercolors can also be used directly from the bottle and don't need to be "activated"

Pros & Cons of Watercolor
  • Pros:

    • Paint is generally inexpensive

    • Small, early, or still wet mistakes can often be fixed with an eraser

    • Versatile in style and combination with other paints

    • Very portable

    • Easy cleanup

    • Less wasted paint

  • Cons:

    • Suitable watercolor paper is often expensive

    • Heavily saturated/dark areas cannot be fixed

    • Difficult to master

Exercise 1: Paint 2 Value Scales

This exercise was meant to introduce us to watercolors. This was a good way for me to get an understanding of the water:paint ratio, drawing using a paintbrush, and just get a feel for it.

Watercolor Wash Techniques

In this activity, we learned the 6 basic wash techniques and how to apply them to my paintings.

  • Flat wash: Wet paper with a paintbrush then evenly paint on color

  • Gradient Wash: Same as flat wash but load more paint on one side

  • Wet on Wet: Wet paint on a wet flat wash

  • Wet on Dry: Wet paint on dry paper

  • Dry on Wet: Dry watercolor (as little water as possible) on a wet flat wash.

  • Dual colors: Two overlapping flat washes.

Mark Making

In this activity, I used different brushes to experiment with different types of strokes and marks.

Wet on Wet vs. Wet on Dry

This activity compares the difference between wet on wet (left) and wet on dry (right) paintings. Painting on dry paper makes the lines more stark while painting on wet paper causes the paint to spread out like a flower.

Watercoloring Bees

In this activity, I watercolored three bees using the wet on dry technique. The slide deck shows the process of painting the bees and the improvement from bee 1 to bee 3.

Drawing an Avocado and Sunset

In these activites, I drew an avocado and a sunset using a combination of the wet on dry and wet on wet technique. There was a big emphasis on layering, especially in the avocado drawing. By layering, I can increase the saturation and make the colors more vibrant/diverse. I messed up on my sunset by putting way too much water and not enough paint. The paper started ripping so I couldn't go back and fix it.

Final_ Sunset over water

Final Painting

My final drawing was a sunset over the water. To make the sky, I used the wet on wet wash technique using an orange. I made the clouds by doing wet on wet with red and touching it up with more red once it dried. to make the water, I also used the wet on wet technique with a base layer of blue. I then went through and added layers of dark blue and purple in a side-to-side manner to create the effect of a reflection. To enhance this, I left the middle a little white. The mountains were made using the wet on dry technique and multiple layers to make it really dark. The sun is just a patch of empty paper.

Running an All-School Event

Running an All-School Event

What Did We Do?
  • Beckett Hobbs, Riley Callan, Kailee Rapkin, and I put together an all-school jeopardy competition for the ASB with the goal of advisory bonding.

  • We met about 8 times for about 1 hour each

  • I spent about another 5 hours doing independent work and coordinating with advisors

Testing Water On Plant Growth

Testing Water On Plant Growth

What Did I Do?
  • I was curious about the extent of which water impacted the growth of plants

  • I tested on radish plants

  • Each box had the same dimensions, soil amount, light exposure, seed count, and planting depth.
