Basketball  Analytics

This d-lab focused on making charts to graph progress towards a set fitness goal. During this d-lab, I ended up switching my project towards the end. This limited the amount of data I could collect.

Title: Punching speed

Problem: How can I increase the speed of which I can punch?

Hypothesis: I will increase my jab speed by 10 percent

Data collection plan: I am measuring how fast I can jab with my left and right hand. I will measure this by using a camera and seeing how many frames it took. Averaging out of 10 jabs each side.

Items needed: Plywood, spray paint, measuring tape, screws, camera, pencil, bandsaw, tape

Procedure:

  • Measure length of arm

  • Get plywood and cut to the length of your reach

  • Divide length into inches and tape every other inch

  • Spray paint wood

  • Let dry

  • Cover up sprayed part with 1 inch tape and spray again with a different paint

  • Let dry

  • Mount on wall using mounting tape

  • Set up camera

  • Jab and record speed in feet per second 10 times for accuracy

  • Convert to miles per hour

  • Do workouts every other day

  • Record again at the end of d-lab

Ways to improve:

Shadow boxing (weighted and unweighted throwing combos)

Fast punching on the heavy bag, speed endurance

Speed bag/double end bag hitting

Push ups and pulling workouts that imitate punching movement

Resistance band training

This was my original d-lab project. I ended up switching to another project, because I was still working on my workout project at the time. I was not able to do both my workouts for this and my workout project without overexerting my body. As a result, I switched to something more laid back with the same data collection process.

Title: Increasing my free throw percentage

Problem: How can I increase my free throw percentage?

Hypothesis: I will increase my free throw percentage as 10 percent

Data collection plan: I will shoot 50 free throws. I will then see how many shots I made out of 50 and try to improve that.

Items needed: Basketball, basketball hoop, rebounder (person)

Procedure:

  • Shoot 50 shots

  • See how many I made

  • Record data

  • Shoot 15 free throws every other day

  • Record

Original Shooting Percentage 11/12

24/50

48%

Final Shooting Percentage 11/18

29/50

58%

Final reflection: My hypothesis was correct. At the end of the d-lab, My free throw shooting percentage increased by 10 percent

Learning & Reflections:

  • Use of charts and cells in excel

  • Writing a scientific report

  • I need to brainstorm and consider anticipated problems before jumping into a project next time

This is the d-lab project project that I ended up doing. However, I have very little data, because I switched so late
